Description
The Andrei Sakharov Archives is a section at the Davis The Russian Research Center was established in 1948 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation, for the purpose of fostering the comprehensive understanding and multidisciplinary study of Russia and the Soviet union. In April 1996, the Russian Research Center was renamed the Kathryn W. and Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian Studies in honor of the generous support of the Davis Foundation. The current name was adopted in July 2002 to more fully represent the core mission of the Center, which is to advance the study of all countries of the region, beginning with, but not restricted to, the current-day Russian Federation.
The Davis Center's primary objectives is to participate in the development of Harvard's rich resources for advanced Russian and Eurasian studies, to provide direct services that allow scholars to make effective use of them, to encourage intellectual exchange and innovation, and to promote the training of graduates and undergraduates in this field.
The Andrei Sakharov Archives is a section at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. It includes Sakharov's personal archive includes documents smuggled to the West since 1978. In 1993, Bonner gave the Sakharov archive to Brandeis University, which carried out most of the cataloging and scanning of the collection. Brandeis President Jehuda Reinharz agreed to transfer the archive to Harvard as part of the Davis Center program. The Harvard College Library and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies jointly curate the collection.
