Description
NIST was established in 1993. It detects sources of information; collects historical materials; registers and preserves oral history; publishes studies and documents about the history of totalitarianism in Romania.
Areas of interest - Aspects of life in Romania under the Communist regime, 1945-1989: economic and social issues; institutions and legislation; culture and development of idea; surveillance and repression; accommodation and resistance; every day life. It also studies forms of totalitarianism during the reign of King Carol II (1930-1940), the Iron Guard government (1940-1941) and the rule of Marshal Ion Antonescu (1941-1944). Political movements and ideological trends that contested the parliamentary regime in Romania between the wars. European and Romanian totalitarianism: influences, similarities, specific aspects.

Collection of books and documents on the history of anti-totalitarian resistance in Romania and other countries from the Communist bloc, 1945 - 1989.
