Description
The library is a federal state institution. It is the largest specialized historical library in Russia. The Library holdings include sources on history and associated fields. The Library collection amounts to some 4 million items, including 2.5 million books, in 47 languages of the peoples of the former USSR and in 65 foreign languages. The library holds a number of events (in particular international on-line events), such as seminars, conferences, and round tables, on history, bibliography, education in the field of history and related topics.
In addition, the library is involved in active research and other projects on the national and international level.

The Collection of Informal (Nontraditional) Press, mainly 1985-2000 contains over 5,000 titles of periodicals (amounting to the total of more than 80,000 units); over 3,000 copies of limited-circulation brochures and books issued by NGOs, political parties, private authors; and a collection of leaflets.

The Archive 'Library of Unpublished Manuscripts' contains literary samizdat, 1960s-1980s, and over 130 samizdat/informal periodicals (1983-1992).
