Description
The Archives of the Environmental Library (founded in 1998) pursuits the following objectives: documentation of the activities of the Environmental Library in Grosshennersdorf; collection, protection and restoration of the documents on peace, environmental, human rights and civil movements in the region and the country; public consciousness-raising with regard to the recent history of the GDR, in particular resistance to the communist regime.
In addition, the Archives of the Environmental Library in Gosshennersdorf is involved in projects carried out within the network of Independent Archives for the Revision of the GDR History.
The archival holdings comprise:
- Documents of the dissent movement in the GDR before 1989-1990, including a collection of 'Grey Literature': journals, leaflets, posters, books, material artifacts;
- Documents on the history of peace, environmental and civil movements in the GDR;
- Samizdat papers of the GDR opposition (chiefly published under the aegis of the church authorities);
- Documents (originating from private collections) related to: the 1953 uprising in East Germany; the Hungarian Revolution of 1956; the Prague Spring of 1968 in Czechoslovakia and its repercussions (e.g. Charter ’77); Czech samizdat and exile literature; the Solidarnosc [Solidarity] movement in Poland.
