Description
The archive-collection, founded in 1989 as a branch of the Sociology Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), consists of 2 sections:

1) Collection of independent press that was published in the former USSR (the late 1980s - early 1990s);

2) Collection of documents of social movements in the former USSR (late 1980s - early 1990s).

Currently, due to the lack of storage space, the collection is not accessible for public use. It is preserved in closed facilities.

Specific: The collection includes samizdat and independent press, primarily published in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic republics (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia).

- 1,000 titles of "periodical samizdat," i.e. unofficial independent uncensored periodicals 1986-1990, and publications not registered after the introduction of the USSR Decree "On Print Press and other Means of Mass Communication" (1990);

- 2,000 titles of new, quazi-legitimate (i.e. editions that emerged within social organizations and were officially distributed) and legitimate (editions that emerged after the Decree on mass communications, and were registered accordingly) press.

The collection is catalogued (both in alphabetical order and by topics).
