Description
GARF as the main archives of the Soviet Union (the Russian Federation) has existed (under different names) since 1938. Over 3,000 fonds (over 5 million file units) cover the period of 1800-1993. The holdings of the Soviet period are prevalent. They contain records of the highest organs of both the USSR and Russian Federation state administration. Some materials are still classified.
An important part of the collection is comprised by materials originating from Prague - Russian Foreign Historical Archive (RZIA). It is made of materials that were acquired by the Soviet Union in 1945.
Besides the archives itself, GARF also includes Scientific Library holdings comprising 520,000 volumes: books, brochures, internal government publications, newspapers.
GARF holds the following documents relating to dissident and oppositional movements, 1941-1991:
- Documents related to individuals persecuted for "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda" activities, from the record of the Prosecutor General of the USSR (fonds R-8131, containers 31 and 36) and the Supreme Court of the USSR (fonds R-9474, containers 39-41).
- Materials of the Council on Religions Affairs (1944-1965): the documents of the Council regarding various religious organizations and sects (Evangelical Baptists, Old-believers, foreign religion groups, etc.) - fonds 6991, opis' 4.
