Description
The Center is involved in research into contemporary developments in Eastern and East-Central Europe in the spheres of culture, politics and society. The center features a unique archives of samizdat and underground documents produced in the Central and Eastern Europe under communist rule.

The center organized an exhibition "Samizdat: Alternative Culture in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1960s-1980s" that was held in Berlin, Budapest, Brussel, Prague in 2000-2004. Catalogue "Samizdat: Alternative Culture in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1960s-980s" was published in corresponding languages.

The Center has built a collection of more than 100,000 Samizdat documents that were published in the countries of the region in the 1950s-1990s recording the prohibited, i.e. unofficial - artistic, literary and scientific production: underground newspapers, banned works of art, outlawed theatre pieces, secret messages from detention camps, leaflets and clandestine videos. A vast majority of the samizdat documents were produced by political, religious and artistic dissent from the former USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, DDR and Hungary. Since the mid-nineties personal bequests and private collections have complemented the collection.
