Description
The Library (founded in 1990) sees insuring citizens’ right to information as its main mission. The original library holdings were based on archival copies of the samizdat Edice Popelnice, issued by Jir? Gruntor?d; further publications were acquired during the period of "normalization". The collection started with about 2,000 books, and a significant number of magazines and other documents.
At present, the library collections (more than 23,000 library units and over 1,750 periodical titles) include:
- samizdat and exile literature;
- archive of documents;
- audiovisual section.
The library offers the following services: lend publications with the posting of a deposit, offers article bibliographies of the most important samizdat magazines, provides consultations and computer research, can copy publications in their entirety or in parts.
The Library's main focus is on post-WWII samizdat and exile publications - literature, periodicals and other materials - produced in Czechoslovakia, Poland, other post-communist countries, and by natives of these countries in exile. In particular the holdings include:
- Czech and Slovak samizdat literature, including periodicals, 1960- 1989;
- Czech and Slovak exile literature, including periodicals, 1948- 1998;
- Polish samizdat literature, including magazines, 1979-1989;
- Materials of the Czech and Polish domestic and foreign opposition (leaflets, postcards, etc.), including documents of VONS, Charter 77, and other independent initiatives; audio and video recordings created by domestic and foreign opposition;
- Literature of the Czech wartime exile, 1939-1945;
- Literature of Russian and Ukrainian exile, including magazines, 1920-1990, (a limited collection);
- Foreign-language literature on Czechoslovakia, including periodicals.
