Description
The Russian National Library (the Saltykov-Shchedrin State Public Library) has always seen its main mission in compiling a comprehensive collection of the press published in Russia. In particular, the library collects, holds and provides public access to independents press that has been published in Russia since the mid-19th century.

Samizdat fonds is primarily located in the Newspaper Department and in the Department of Manuscripts. The fonds (mostly originating from Moscow and St.Petersburg/Leningrad, some from the former Baltic republics of the USSR) includes: a collection of informal periodicals, 1986-1990; books and periodicals legally published in 1986-1990 by various public organizations (acquired by the library directly from publishers, as "mandatory copies", i.e. copies that were donated directly by publishers, under the law governing mandatory donations).
