Description
The KARTA Center is an independent non-governmental organization (incorporated as a foundation), documenting and popularizing the recent history of Poland and Eastern Europe. It is the heir of the illegal "Karta" and the clandestine Eastern Archives of the 1980s. Eastern Archives contains materials on the history of the Eastern Borderlands of the II Polish Republic, persecution of Polish citizens under the Soviet occupation and in the USSR, displacement during WWII.

Opposition Archives holds sources describing social and political life in Poland in 1944-89, mainly resistance against the Communist rule, starting from the post-war armed underground, Stalinist years, through the breakthroughs of 1956, 1968, 1970, and 1976, to the history of the democratic opposition and Solidarity.

Photography Archives comprises photographs depicting social history including opposition movement in the 20th century in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe.

The website contains an online catalogue in the Polish language.

The Center's major periodical publication is "Karta" (published underground in the years 1982-89 and officially since 1991 (41 issues) - a quarterly on the history of the individual in Poland and Eastern Europe in 20th century.
