NEWS, UPDATES FROM IS[R]A MEMBERS Conference "From Samizdat to Tamizdat: Dissent Media Crossing Borders Before and After 1989" Vienna, 12-15 September, 2006 Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, Vienna in co-operation with Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung, Potsdam Drawing from the disciplines of history, literature, political science, anthropology, sociology, and media studies, this conference takes as its starting point the movement of printed material between Eastern and Western Europe (as well as across the Atlantic) during the Cold War. Beyond taking a closer look at the cultural transfer between East and West, we will focus on the impact of censorship on media and the ensuing emergence of dissident/underground media. We will debate the role of individuals and institutions involved in the archiving of samizdat/tamizdat, and discuss future strategies for the preservation and circulation of relevant source material. The project will deliberately expand the traditional definition of samizdat and tamizdat and use it as a marker of cultural transfer for the analysis of a broad variety of cultural projects that cross ideological, political or cultural borders. In order to establish a link to today's media, we propose to compare underground circulation of uncensored texts during the Cold War with evolving forms of journalism after 1989, looking at new media and new forms of underground or unofficial communication today. For more details see conference website at http://www.samizdatportal.org IWM (Austria), ZZF (Germany) CALL FOR PAPERS The European Career School in Pozna? invites to participation in a conference The Ways to Freedom in the Culture of Central and Eastern Europe 1956-2006 5-7 November 2006 Patronage of Seym Marshal Marek Jurek The aim of the conference is to exchange experiences and opinions on forms of culture beyond censorship and control of the communist government. Various forms of resistant culture, more or less evident, functioned in the area of publishing activity, literature, theatre, photography, music. Despite many of them entered durably European and world culture, their richness, range and forms are not well known in their native societies. There is also a deficiency of a synthetic embrace indicating historical variability and numerous resemblances of independent movements in the area of Central and Eastern Europe. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the workers’ strike in Pozna? in June 1956 and Hungarian October 1956. The memory of the events, expressed in the independent literature, theater, songs was a significant feature shaping social awareness. Organizers of the conference kindly invite persons who make research on independent culture or were active in the field of independent culture and would like to share their valuable experiences. The conference will commence the activity of the Center for Research of Dissident Movements in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century, founded by the European Career School and Foundation “Solidarity Archives in Wielkopolska”. We look forward applications to the conference until August 30th 2006. September 2006 entgegengenommen. Für Organisationskomitee Rektor der Fachhochschule für europäisches Fachpersonal Prof. Dr. hab.
